Verified Moderators

It's important to select a trustworthy moderator when buying or selling in OpenBazaar. Most moderators are OpenBazaar users who want to help others resolve disputes, but as with any marketplace there are a few scammers who try to game the system.

In order to help prevent users from unwittingly choosing bad moderators, OB1 offer a verified moderators service. We maintain a list of moderators that have gone through our verification process. This process is explained in detail in this post, but is summarized as follows:

  1. 1. Moderators must create a Keybase profile and link several long-standing accounts to the profile, proving their ownership of them.
  2. 2. Moderators must publish their moderation guidelines and then sign a message proving they control the OpenBazaar ID and publish it in their OpenBazaar profile.
  3. 3. Moderators must show a sufficiently long track record of accounts online (tied to identity) that OB1 can hold them accountable if they beginning abusing their position.

We believe this process will make it extremely difficult for dedicated scammers to gain verified moderator status, since they would need to prove ownership of multiple long-standing online accounts tied to a specific identity.

The verification process doesn't ensure moderators will provide quality dispute resolution service, only that we don't believe they are intentionally trying to scam users on the network. If we receive reports from users that a verified moderator is abusing their position, or even if it's simply a lack of responsiveness, we can remove that moderator from the list.
